Precious Deep Sea Corals
The goal of sustainability in the coral jewelry sector has been addressed as follow:
In recent years, the GFCM – General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean Sea – has organized a series of workshops in various cities in Europe and North Africa, attended by researchers, technicians, and scientists from around the world, along with representatives of all Mediterranean governments. The result was the development of a series of mandatory recommendations to ensure that coral fishing is compatible with the marine ecosystem and sustainable over time. The most important measures implemented for fisheries management in the Mediterranean include the following:
Fishing is permitted only by divers.
The only permitted tool during harvesting is the ice axe.
Fishing at depths of less than 50 meters is strictly prohibited.
Licensed fishermen must document and report the quantities caught and fishing effort to the competent authorities by completing a specific form used to create a database.
Harvesting coral branches with a diameter of less than 7 mm is prohibited.
Harvested coral can only be landed at ports designated by local authorities.
Local management plans, which regulate fishing in various regions of the Mediterranean, are authorized to apply more stringent measures than those described above.
Local management is based on a system of limited fishing licenses, limited fishing quotas assigned to each fisherman, rotation of harvesting areas, and limited fishing seasons.
All these measures, combined with continuous monitoring by the GFCM (FAO), ensure the environmental sustainability of red coral fishing over time.
